Skall Studio's southern escape

Skall Studio, Wednesday, August 7, 2024 at 12 PM, Brøndsalen

Where last summer Skall Studio exuded Danish summer house idyll, this season they took us south to warmer climes. With a show in front of Brøndsalen in Frederiksberg Garden, against the warmly yellow wall and under a scorching sun, it was easy to daydream of Southern Europe while dressed in their SS25 collection. The collection was notably less sweet than Skall tends to be with puff sleeves and quilting, dialling up a more laid-back and chic elegance that still exudes the good, calm life, just in a French version.

With this French touch, there were pieces like white, slightly sheer broderie anglaise tops, shorts, dresses, and shirts, which, along with white denim and a robust satin blazer, would suit both an office-friendly summer wardrobe and a holiday at the local market. The embroidery also came in a black variant on a white background, adding edge and contrast to the more typical Skall silhouettes of puffed sleeves and flowing skirts.

The numerous black looks were particularly elegant, whether in ensembles with vests or jackets, or in floor-length dresses that captured that comfortable yet luxurious well-dressed vibe, appearing effortless and polished simultaneously. The strapless, utterly simple black dress with a narrow picot edge at the bottom was what I would call a Skall version of an evening gown – definitely not overdone, but simply stunning and a tad sexy, a word I wouldn’t usually associate with Skall Studio. Elegant too were sets with slim skirts and sleeveless tops, where the white set with appliquéd flowers on the shoulder would look perfect for a stroll in Monet’s garden or other cultural outings of the holiday.

Skall Studio continues to hold on to their denim, which, in addition to the soft, wide jeans already a classic for them, also appeared in a new wash with a bit more texture and rawness, suiting the brand’s otherwise very romantic look. The light blue denim was actually one of the only pops of colour in the collection – along with a navy jacket and a single dress in a delicate peach hue – which otherwise stuck to black, white, and beige, and a delicious nougat brown. The nougat brown was used on several of the collection’s tailored pieces, appealing to a more serious look that is still comfortable – never tight or too close-fitting, just well-fitting and classic.

Julie and Marie Skall, the sisters behind the brand, sell us the dream of the good, carefree life, where no worries are allowed to intrude, and the sun always shines. And if it doesn’t, we simply throw a good knit over our shoulders and keep enjoying. There’s nothing provocative or standout; it’s just thoroughly nice and delightful, and sometimes a collection doesn’t need to be more than that. If the point of this collection is to invite us south, then I say: yes please.
