Munthe, Thursday 10. August 2023 at 11.00, Kuglegården

Earlier today Munthe invited us to a show in the Kuglegården by their head office where the entire beautiful courtyard was surrounded by banners with paintings created by Naja Munthe herself. Twenty different ones to be exact (which will be, of course, re-sewn into bags after the show, so nothing goes to waste) and where one of the paintings reappeared on a t-shirt in the show if you looked closely.

If you know Naja Munthe, you also know about her love for art, and therefore today’s show could also be experienced as a gallery with small, curated works of art, which may perhaps pull a little in different directions, but as a whole actually works really well, as did today’s show. The start and end in particular were strong, like the pearl-embroidered lace blouse over a feminine – without being ‘too cute’ – floral print that opened the show, and the following white suit, where the trousers, as a nice detail, had external pockets. There were also some really cool and new-for-Munthe all-black entrances, such as the shirt in vegan leather with a cut-out floral pattern, a long-fringed skirt and a similarly long black jacket also with fringes held together by a belt with the brand’s new monogram.

Munthe is also really good at denim and that was demonstrated at the show today, among other things in the form of a set of short patchwork shorts with a matching jacket, but also more classic styles in light and dark denim. As always with Munthe, there were also stripes. A pretty dress in thin lurex knit and classic light blue and white striped cargo pants were among the favourites, but the stripes in multi-coloured mesh were not as impactful.

There is no doubt that Naja Munthe has a clear vision for the brand and she knows where she wants it to go. And she actually succeeds quite well, because she sticks to the brand’s DNA with the things that have to be there, but they are done with innovation, so they don’t become either boring or predictable. And when at the same time you manage to make super dressy clothes that many can definitely see themselves in, then you have to give yourself a pat on the back.
