Returning to Copenhagen after her stunning AW20 show, Selam Fessahaye, and her team staged her latest installment at Lokomotivværkstedet, kicking off Black History Month with a gorgeous celebration of blackness. Alongside TG Botanical and STAMM, Selam Fessahaye is one of three nominees for the Zalando Sustainability Award, and for the show, Selam used the dogma of sustainable fabric selections to play to her absolute advantage.
Having developed her own textiles from recycled material, dead stock, and upcycled waste, Fessahaye incorporated materials ranging from animal prints and plastic fish booties, to embossed metallic fabric and sheer chiffon.
Fans and press alike were excited by the multiple show pieces that each told a story. From purposed sequins in a gown that channeled a fresh and fun nod to 80’s glam, to the subtlety of hidden hippo emerging, to gradient zebra stripes dissolving into the design. While continuing her exploration of how clothing is indeed narrative, Selam Fessahaye presented a collection that entertained her in every way. From a belted red rose print plush robe with trouser pants to a globe print shower curtain-esque draped hooded three-piece set. Selam Fessahaye brought her oversized silhouettes and asymmetrical cut-out suits down the runway, while also showcasing utility detailing and curiosity with cascading pockets, defined shoulders, and mixed materials.
Her wearable language spoke many words, performing and expressing references to a type of sustainability that could still impress, be bold, daring, and cool.
Selam Fessahaye’s colorful, masterful, and exciting collection returns to the designers ability to present a new Nordic aesthetic while honoring the African diaspora through joyful storytelling.
